Every AOG call eventually arrives at the same question: what does the flight cost? It is the wrong first question — but let us answer it anyway.
The clock is the real price tag
Industry estimates put a grounded airliner in the thousands of dollars per hour once cancellations, rebookings, crew displacement, and downstream schedule damage stack up. A regional jet that misses a morning of flying does not lose one flight — it loses the day’s whole rotation. That number is the denominator in every AOG decision, and it is almost always larger than the aircraft that fixes it.
What actually drives charter price
- Distance and routing. Stage length sets the floor. Direct routing to the field your maintenance team names — not the nearest hub — is the point of chartering.
- Aircraft size. A shoebox-sized LRU flies on a turboprop. An engine flies on a freighter. We quote the aircraft the part needs, not the biggest one available.
- Positioning. The right-sized aircraft is not always parked at your origin. Part of dispatch craft is sourcing the closest lift from a 2,000+ operator network so you pay for the mission, not the ferry.
- Timing. Nights, weekends, and holidays are normal in this business. What matters is that the desk answers and the quote comes back in minutes, whatever the clock says.
When the math works
Three patterns cover most missions we fly. The aircraft is out of service into tomorrow and the part sits eight driving hours away — the charter buys back a day of rotation. The part is booked next-flight-out but the connection is fragile and the window closes tonight — the charter removes the single point of failure. Or the delay is compounding: crews about to time out, a hangar slot about to be lost — the charter stops the bleeding.
The honest answer
